The objective here was to pick a social event day that is celebrated here in Canada and design a poster to raise awareness about it. The design needed to be impactful, grab the attention of the viewer and reflect the tone of voice of the event.
Due to the nature of this event I decided to target a younger audience as they need to be educated on the history behind it.
My concept for this piece consisted of creating a poppy flower drawing (the symbol for remembrance day) with names of our fellow Canadian soldiers who died during WW1, WW2 and Afghanistan. I opted for a hand-written look as I figured it would offer more relatability to a young target audience.
For the colours I decided to go for a vibrant red, just like real poppies, to grab the viewer’s attention and put it on a solid black background to give it a more serious and formal feel.
The end result is quite successful, an eye-catching design that makes the viewer want to get closer and observe the finer details. This increases engagement with the poster and encourages the person to learn more about this important event.
